Our vision

if it's broken fit it tshirt

Our global vision is of an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economic system for all people and the planet. We are mobilizing the B Corp movement to change our economic system to positively impact all stakeholders — workers, communities, customers, and our planet. We won’t stop until all business is a force for good.

B Lab & the B Corp Movement

B Lab is the nonprofit network transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet. It began in 2006 with the idea that a different kind of economy was not only possible, it was necessary – and that business could lead the way towards a new, stakeholder-driven model.

Today there are many B Labs across the globe (forming the B Global Network) including Australia, East Africa, mainland Europe and North and South America. All B Labs certify B Corporations, which are companies that meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

B Lab Europe was founded in 2013 and currently oversees the growth of the movement in Benelux, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Scandinavia and Spain and other countries across the continent. We mobilize the B Corp community in Europe towards collective action to address society’s most critical challenges and, in collaboration with the Global Network, we create standards, policies, tools, and programs that shift the behavior, culture, and structure of capitalism.

Together, we are shifting our economic system from profiting only the few to benefiting all, from concentrating wealth and power to ensuring equity, from extraction to regeneration, and from prioritizing individualism to embracing interdependence.

Growth of the movement

In 2021 our global community has reached the milestone of 4,000 B Corps! That’s 4,000 businesses across 77 countries employing 280,000 workers in 153 industries. In Europe, we have over 630 companies certified across the region.

Standards Advisory Council & Regional SAC

Oversight of the B Impact Assessment is the responsibility of B Lab’s Standards Advisory Council, an independent committee of 20-22 members, each with deep industry or stakeholder expertise. The Standards Advisory Council is divided into two subgroups — one to oversee the content and weightings for the version of the B Impact Rating System that is appropriate for companies and funds in developed markets; the other for the version that is appropriate for companies and funds in emerging markets.

Advisory and Working Groups

The B Impact Assessment is tailored to a company’s size, sector, and market. When the need arises for more nuance in assessing the impact of particular topic areas, models, or industries, B Lab convenes expert working groups to develop standards for approval by the Standards Advisory Council.

Multinational and Public Markets Advisory Council

An increasing number of mission-aligned, multinational and public companies (MPCs) have recently expressed interest in B Corp certification and in helping to accelerate the movement. MPCs, however, are often challenged to apply the performance standards and meet the legal requirement for certification due to their more complex operating and governance structures.

To address this challenge, B Lab has created the Multinationals and Public Markets Advisory Council (MPMAC), a multi-stakeholder advisory body tasked with recommending a meaningful, manageable path to certification for MPCs. The MPMAC is composed of two working groups—one focused on mission-aligned structures for MPCs, and one focused on creating meaningful performance standards. Learn more about the MPMAC’s scope and timeline.
