B Lab Europe is pleased to announce the establishment of the European B Lawyers Group in collaboration with ESELA (European Social Enterprise Law Association).
The B Lawyers Group gathers lawyers and legal experts in the field of B Corps and profit with purpose businesses.
The group will share knowledge and expertise about B Corps, the B Corp movement, benefit corporation legislation and how profit and purpose interact in the governance of these kinds of businesses. It will be an opportunity to learn from others and for individual lawyers and law firms to become the leaders in this area of law in their respective jurisdictions and to educate and support their commercial clients.
The group is co-chaired by Niamh Callaghan, a corporate partner at Mason Hayes & Curran in Ireland, and David Davies, a corporate partner at Bates Wells Braithwaite in the UK. Bill Clark, a partner at Drinker Biddle & Reath in the US and the author of the model law on benefit corporations is also a member of the group.
The first initiative launched by the Group is an extensive and high-level analysis of the interaction between the legal requirement of the B Corp Certification and the existing company legislation of several European countries.
The analysis will constitute the foundations to build future initiatives, ranging from company law reform to adopt benefit corporation legislation, to provide a useful guide for companies, lawyers, policymakers, and the general public seeking to understand the meaning and the legal implications of the legal requirement for each European jurisdiction.
