Meet the B Corps - Best for the World 2017 - HELIOZ

HELIOZ is a social enterprise based in Vienna that develops products with the potential to revolutionize the way clean water is obtained. Its aim is to support people from the bottom of the pyramid and to treat them as customers and not as beggars to ensure a sustainable support.

This year HELIOZ was Best for the World in the categories "Overall" and "Customers".

 

MH: What does being on the Best for the World list mean for your company?

We feel very honored to be cited on this list. At HELIOZ we believe that it is crucial to support people to help themselves. Being a social enterprise can be challenging, sometimes we are mistaken as a charity and other times we are criticized for having to generate income. However, we consider that our strategy is a sustainable approach to change the world for the better and being on the list “Best for the World” is a great sign, which shows us that we’re going in the right direction. 

 

MH: What practices has your company implemented that has helped you become Best for the World?

We want to live in a world, where every person has access to safe drinking water. As a social enterprise, we work hard to reach this ambitious goal by following a holistic approach. Our customers are people from the bottom of the pyramid and we treat them as customers, not as beneficiaries. Our product called WADI is a solar-powered UV-measurement device which visualizes the progress of solar water disinfection. WADI fulfils the criteria set by the World Health Organization (WHO) for safe drinking water, works solar powered and therefore improves the health situation, reduces costs and CO2 emission. We believe that our holistic approach has helped us to become Best for the World.

 

MH: In what ways does the company include and consider your stakeholders in achieving your mission and having a positive impact? How has it contributed to the company fulfilling its mission? 

Due to our integral approach, our stakeholders are essential for us to achieve our impact. We are very open to suggestions and encourage our customers, employees and the local communities to discuss experiences from the field with us

 

MH: What has your company learned about its operations and areas for improvement by certifying through the B Impact Assessment?

The third-party verification was much needed and it helps us to emphasize our objectives and our transparency. We happily notice a growing interest in sustainable business approaches. 

MH: Does the company actively seek improvement in its B Impact Assessment score? If yes, what goals do you have for continued improvement?

HELIOZ acts impact driven and we constantly try to improve our goals which also include the B Impact Assessment score. One of our future goals is to increase our impact on the local community and to propel job creation. 

 

MH: Is your company targeting Best for the World lists it isn’t already on? If so, which ones and how does it hope to achieve that target?

Yes, we want to be listed on “Best for Environment”. WADI, our UV-indicator for solar water disinfection is solar powered, requires no batteries and the entire disinfection process requires no firewood or gas. This reduces CO2 emissions for water disinfection and also helps to save pristine environments because less wood and therefore less logging are required for the consumption of safe drinking water. We hope we can display clearer the environmental impact of WADI and apart from this we also try as a company to act as environmentally friendly as possible.
